1st model Brown Bess Musket, 46 inch barrel

Brown Bess is the popular term used to designate a series of flintlock infantry muskets which remained in use in the British Army for over a century.
They were smoothbore muzzleloaders with a barrel dowelled to the stock. The loading procedure was quite cumbersome: The charge consisted of black powder and a sub-caliber shot wrapped in paper to form a kind of ball. The folded end of this paper cartridge had to be torn with the teeth, the lock's flash pan primed with a small amount of black powder and the remaining powder finally poured down the barrel. Only then could the shot and the paper be firmly rammed down the barrel onto the powder charge with the aid of the ramrod.

The Brown Bess exist in several variations. Present musket is a replica of the first model, the so-called First Model Brown Bess Musket, also known as Long Land Brown Bess or Long Land Pattern, in its 1742 version. In the second half of the 18th century and beyond, it was the standard gun of the British forces and saw service in all conflicts of the time. Although a new model was introduced in 1756, the First Model Brown Bess actually kept being issued to the troops, so that it remained the prevalent weapon during the Seven Years' War. As the 1742 Long Land Pattern stocks were still not exhausted after the end of this war, these muskets continued to be used in the battles of the American War of Independence, alongside the new Short Land Musket.

Our muzzle-loader replicas are intended for decoration and re-enactment only. The muzzle has not been drilled, so the weapon is not functional. However, an expert gunsmith is able to drill the muzzle and make it to a functional gun. You should check with your authorities if this is legal in your country.

A beautiful item for every collection and an indispensable accessory for re-enactors.
