Product information "Gotland Viking Axe Blade"
Gotland Viking Axe Blade

During the Viking Age, the axe enjoyed great popularity, both as a tool and as a weapon. Compared to the sword, it was not only easier, but also much cheaper to make and therefore the most prevalent weapon of the common people in early medieval Scandinavia.

The Viking axe head we offer here is modelled after an archaeological find from the late 10th century, that was discovered on the Swedish island of Gotland (Stenstugu, Hejde), and is now on display at the Gotlands museum in Visby.

The broad axe blade is forged from high carbon steel, has a blunt edge, and features an open section forming a cross at its centre. The oxide scale layer lends the Viking axe a rustic, authentic character.

This Gotlandic Viking axehead with cross motif is designed as a collector's or decoration / display piece. You can easily haft it by using an axe wedge (for example ULF-AX-09V) to use it as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume and make your transformation into a proud warrior just perfect.

Details:
- Material: high carbon steel (not stainless!), blunt edge
- Overall length (from butt to edge): approx. 21.5 cm
- Edge length: approx. 16 cm
- Thickness: approx. 4.5 mm (edge approx. 2.5 mm)
- Eye: approx. 35 mm x 23 mm
- Weight: approx. 680 g
- Supplied WITHOUT shaft

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.

Please note:
As this early medieval cross axe is a forged product, each piece is unique and slight variations in shape and/or surface finish are quite normal. Above pictures are thus for reference only.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain axes on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
